Here are some possible internship topics (all papers referred to in the text below are available on line and contain more details). The other colleagues I name in the text below are people I work with and who might also be involved in any internship. I am interested in regression testing and continue to work with Shin Yoo on this. You can see some of the possible topics in my paper called MORTO as examples: Mark Harman Making the Case for MORTO: Multi Objective Regression Test Optimization The 1st International Workshop on Regression Testing (Regression 2011). Berlin, Germany, March 2011. I am also very interested in the DAASE and GISMOE project agendas which are captured in these two papers: Mark Harman (joint work with Edmund Burke, John Clark and Xin Yao) Dynamic Adaptive Search Based Software Engineering (keynote paper) 6th ACM/IEEE International Symposium on Empirical Software Engineering and Measurement (ESEM 2012) Lund, Sweden, September 19th-20th, 2012. Mark Harman (joint work with Bill Langdon, Yue Jia David White, Andrea Arcuri, and John Clark) The GISMOE challenge: Constructing the Pareto Program Surface Using Genetic Programming to Find Better Programs (keynote paper) 27th IEEE/ACM International Conference on Automated Software Engineering (ASE 2012) Essen, Germany, September 3rd-7th, 2012. I work on these topics in collaboration with many of my colleagues in CREST. In particular, I'm working with Bill Langdon, Shin Yoo, Yue Jia and Yuanyuan Zhang on these two related agenda. I expect they will expand rapidly over the next few years. The GISMOE paper is a longer version of the material and ideas I presented to the ENS students. I am also interested in SBSE for software product lines, but have no paper on this yet, though it is mentioned in the GISMOE paper above. I hope to work with Jens Krinke on this and to recruit at least one student on this topic, since I think there is a lot to be done. I am interested in extending Kiran Lakhotia's testing work to client-side web application testing. This would be jointly supervised with Kiran who is also developing this: Kiran Lakhotia, Phil McMinn and Mark Harman. An Empirical Investigation Into Branch Coverage for C Programs Using CUTE and AUSTIN Journal of Systems and Software. 83(12): 2379-2391, 2010. I am also interested in the use of SBSE in predictive modelling: Mark Harman The Relationship between Search Based Software Engineering and Predictive Modeling (keynote paper) 6th International Conference on Predictive Models in Software Engineering (PROMISE 2010). Timişoara, Romania, 12-13 September 2010. I hope to work with a student and my new RA (Federica Sarro) on this topic. Since there are several applications (faults, effort and other predictions) I think there may be room for more than one student to work on this. I already have one really smart student probably starting in September 2014 on this topic. There is room for one more I think. I am also interested in the link between SBSE, transformation and refactoring: Mark Harman Refactoring as Testability Transformation (keynote paper) Refactoring and Testing Workshop (RefTest 2011) Berlin, Germany, March 2011. I've also worked with Bill Langdon and with Yue Jia on Higher Order Mutation and I think there is a lot more to be done: Mark Harman (joint work with Bill Langdon, and Yue Jia) A Manifesto for Higher Order Mutation Testing (keynote paper) 5th International Workshop on Mutation Analysis (Mutation 2010) Paris, France, 6 April, 2010. I am also interested in the links between Machine learning, SBSE and Software Engineering more generally and also links between information theory and SBSE. This is also a topic in which my colleague Shin Yoo is very interested. Any student I supervised on either topic would be joint supervised with Shin Yoo. There will be a workshop in ML and SE in CREST in January 2013 (http://crest.cs.ucl.ac.uk/cow/). I am interested in mining app stores and using SNSE here, I have done recent work with yuanyuan Zhang on this and she would be a co-supervisor of any work I did on that: Mark Harman and Yue Jia and Yuanyuan Zhang App Store Mining and Analysis: MSR for App Stores Proceedings of the 9th Working Conference on Mining Software Repositories (MSR '12), Zurich, Switzerland, 2-3 June 2012 I am interested in applications of SBSE to cloud computing and have a forthcoming paper in JSS about this (joint work with Kiran Lakhotia and Shin yoo in CREST). Finally, we've been doing some interesting work on clone detection using SBSE (this is joint work with Jens Krinke and Yue Jia) and this might be interesting.
